Five, four, three, two, one…9:38 AM.

At that exact time, Jeanette opened the graffitied door of her New York dance studio. She stepped outside, popped a strip of gum into her mouth and adjusted her in-ear bluetooth device.

“J here. I’m ready,” she stated. “You guys copy?”

“Yeah, I’m set too,” said Alyssa from Ghana. She stood up from her gardening work by the front door, wiping a smear of dirt from the plaque that read 48.

Ciao,” piped in Olivia as she effortlessly sketched the scenic gondolas passing by her home’s chocolate-brown doors. “It’s Liv.”

“Good day, ladies,” greeted a cheerful Londoner, Louis. Sticking his coat collar up against the wind, he shut the shiny black door behind him. “Hope I’m on time.”

, ,” Mateo confirmed from his spot in Barcelona, outside the bright green door of his shop. It was Sunday, so there was relatively less customer traffic—very convenient.

“I’ve been ready ever since I was told of this mission,” remarked Krishnan with a chuckle, firmly latching the grill gate of his Pondicherry abode.

“Well, let’s get going!” Olivia said cheerily. “Our first task for today is—”

“Wait, guys!” cried Alyssa. “The actual first task is to mask up, remember?”

Each of the six people connecting from around the globe agreed and put on their face masks in unison.

“Well, that was task number one: protect yourself and your community,” noted Olivia. “Ready for task two?”

This very short story comes across to me as quite open-ended (ooh, what’s this secret mission all about?), but with an important message that I hope to have conveyed, though I’m sure everybody already knows!

Stay safe and healthy everyone! Have a great day 😉
