LETTER FROM A HERMIT: My take on this week’s dVerse’s Prosery

The goal: Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose up of up to or exactly 144 words, including this line from May Sarton’s poem, “Meditation in Sunlight”:

“In space in time I sit thousands of feet above the sea”

(scribbled in green ink, on a crumpled tissue)

Hi.

You probably picked this up from the yellow table in the cafeteria, next to the dry waste can. The one that’s got a mysterious purple stain on it. This is where I usually eat my lunch. It’s nice and breezy, and has a good view of the science block. I like sitting here and checking if the bottles in the reagent cabinet are in the same order everyday (clue: never). It’s a fun game. No one ever bothers coming this way, you know. Like, not even the janitor—I sit thousands of feet above the sea. So thanks.

If you didn’t find this on the yellow table in the cafeteria…well, maybe write back? Or come and say hi? I could use the company. In space, in time. Or just at the yellow table for lunch.

SATURNINE: My Entry for Sammi’s Weekend Writing Prompt #299

The light turns red.
My eyes wander out the window
and find
a child's face.
In silence
he watches me,
sweet, saturnine.
Clutched in his small, rough hands
are roses
that haven't yet found
their lovers.

Please.

The light turns green.
I feel them wilting behind me.

A Double Entry!

Here’s my poem for dVerse’s Quadrille #169 and KL Caley’s #WRITEPHOTO Challenge!

Write me a letter, my love,
and fold it into a crane;
send it with the breeze
and whisper my name
so that it may find me—
beyond the realms
where mortals speak,
behind a curtain of stars,
to my door in the sky.
